Start here before you trade — everything below is theory, no fake money involved yet.

What does it actually mean to "invest"?

Investing means putting money into something today with the goal of it growing in value over time — instead of spending it now, or letting it sit still where inflation slowly eats its value. When you buy a stock, you're buying a small slice of ownership in a real company. If the company does well, your slice tends to become more valuable. If it does poorly, your slice can lose value too. That trade-off between potential reward and potential loss is called risk, and understanding it is the whole game.

The building blocks

📈 Stocks

A share of ownership in a company. Prices move up and down based on how investors feel about the company's future — its profits, its products, its leadership, even the wider economy.

🧺 ETFs

An Exchange-Traded Fund bundles many stocks into one basket you can buy in a single trade. Buying an ETF like SPY spreads your risk across hundreds of companies instead of betting on just one.

🏦 Bonds

A loan you give to a company or government, which pays you back with interest. Bonds are usually lower-risk and lower-reward than stocks — steadier, but slower growth.

Core concepts, one accordion at a time

Generally, investments that can grow your money faster (higher potential return) can also lose it faster (higher risk). A savings account is low-risk and low-return. A single small company's stock is high-risk and potentially high-return. There's no investment that's both perfectly safe and guaranteed to grow fast — anyone who claims otherwise is usually running a scam.

Diversification means spreading your money across different companies, industries, and even countries, so that one bad outcome doesn't wipe out your whole portfolio. It's why the Leaderboard in this app ranks by percentage growth instead of raw dollars — steady, diversified growth is a more valuable skill than one lucky big bet.

When your investment earns a return, and then that return itself starts earning a return, growth speeds up over time — like a snowball rolling downhill. The earlier you start, the more time compounding has to work, which is why even small amounts invested as a teenager can matter a lot by the time you're an adult.

A stock quote usually shows: the ticker symbol (a short code like AAPL), the current price per share, and the daily change (how much it moved today, in dollars and percent). On the Trade page, green means the price is up today and red means it's down.

A "bull market" is a period where prices are generally rising and investors feel confident. A "bear market" is a period of falling prices and pessimism. Markets move through both cycles over time — reacting to short-term dips by panic-selling is one of the most common investing mistakes.

When you sell an investment for more than you paid, the profit is called a capital gain, and many countries tax it. Visit the Tax Sim tab to play with a simplified, simulated version of how income and capital gains taxes work.

Glossary

Ticker Symbol

The short letter code used to identify a stock, e.g. AAPL for Apple.

Market Cap

The total value of all a company's shares combined (share price × number of shares).

P/E Ratio

Price-to-Earnings ratio — how much investors pay for each dollar a company earns.

Dividend

A portion of company profit paid directly to shareholders, usually on a regular schedule.

Volatility

How much and how quickly a price swings up and down. High volatility = bigger, faster moves.

Portfolio

The full collection of everything you own — all your stocks, ETFs, bonds, and cash together.

Exchange

The marketplace where stocks are bought and sold, e.g. the NYSE in the US or the NGX in Nigeria.

Bull / Bear Market

A "bull" market is rising and optimistic; a "bear" market is falling and pessimistic.

Going global

Investing isn't limited to one country. The Trade tab now includes both the US market and Nigeria's stock exchange, the NGX — home to companies like Dangote Cement, MTN Nigeria, and Zenith Bank. NGX stocks show their live price in Naira (₦) first, with an approximate US-dollar equivalent underneath — since your wallet balance is tracked in USD, that's the amount actually deducted when you trade.

Understanding Taxes as an Investor

Taxes fund shared things like roads, schools, and hospitals — they're not something to "beat." But investors do use completely legal strategies to lower how much they owe. Expand each topic below to learn how, then try the simulator underneath.

Governments collect tax to pay for things everyone benefits from — roads, public schools, hospitals, emergency services, and social programs. When people talk about investors "saving on taxes," they don't mean avoiding their fair share — they mean legally structuring how and when they buy, hold, and sell investments so they're not paying more than the law actually requires.

Most countries use a progressive tax system: income is split into chunks called brackets, and each chunk is taxed at its own rate — not your whole income at the highest rate you reach. Earning more never makes your take-home pay go down; it just means the extra income above each threshold is taxed a bit more. Drag the income slider below to watch this in action.

When you sell an investment for more than you paid, that profit is a capital gain — and it's usually taxed. In many countries (including the US), how long you held it matters a lot: sell within a year and the profit is often taxed like regular income ("short-term"); hold over a year and it often qualifies for a lower long-term capital gains rate. This is one of the biggest reasons patient, long-term investors often keep more of their profits than frequent traders.

None of these are loopholes — they're built into tax law on purpose, usually to encourage saving and long-term investing:

Holding investments over a year to qualify for lower long-term capital gains rates
Using tax-advantaged retirement accounts (like a 401(k) or IRA in the US) where money can grow without being taxed every year
Tax-loss harvesting: selling an investment that's down to offset the tax owed on one that's up
Spreading investments across account types so gains land wherever they're taxed most favorably
Some governments offer tax-exempt investments — like certain municipal bonds in the US — where the interest earned isn't taxed at all

Rules like these vary hugely by country — this is a simplified overview, not personal tax advice.

Tax avoidance means legally arranging your finances to pay only what you actually owe — using retirement accounts, timing sales, and similar strategies exactly as tax law intends. Tax evasion means illegally hiding income or lying to avoid tax you genuinely owe, and it carries serious legal penalties. Every strategy above falls under the first, legal category.
